Michelangelo Olivero Pistoletto was born in Biella on June 25, 1933 and is one of the most famous Italian living artists in the world.
Son of art, as his father Ettore Olivero Pistoletto was already familiar with art because he had made a series of paintings on the history of wool for the famous company Zenia of Biella.
About a year after his birth, the family moved to Turin, where his father had opened his own restoration business.
It is precisely there that Pistoletto will learn the basics of modern art painting and drawing, the new restoration techniques, thus approaching art in its entirety.
His first work will be a self-portrait that he will exhibit in 1955 at the Circolo degli Artisti in Turin.
In the sixties he will produce his famous mirrored paintings, real-size photographic images shown on tissue paper, on a glossy and reflective surface (polished stainless steel plates) and brushed over again.
The viewer of the work, looking at it, with its image reflected in the composition will be an integral part of the artistic creation.
In 1967 he created the Venere degli stracci, his most famous work, now exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Castello di Rivoli.
At the end of the seventies, beginning of the eighties, the artist will approach sculptures in polyurethane or marble with creations such as L'ETRUSCO (1976), IL GIGANTE (1981) or L'ACROBATA (1982).
In 1998, Pistoletto founded the CITTADELLARTE in Biella, a large creative laboratory that will host young artists, which will range in different arts, such as: Music, fashion, design, theater, etc., as well as politics, education, nourishment, ecology, economy, etc., thus giving life to projects based on the combination of art and society; his permanent collection is also present there.
In 2005, at the fifty-first Venice Biennale, he proposed the Terzo Paradiso, an event aimed at involving adults and children and addressing both the respect for nature and urban spaces.
